How to get WD Elements drive to work on Raspberry Pi

I’ve taken delivery today of the 18 TB version of this drive, which I have connected to my Raspberry Pi via USB.

The Pi is able to see, and mount, the drive. But when I try to copy files over to it from another driver, it starts the copy and then the Pi crashes after a few seconds, requiring a reboot.

The WD drive is powered separately from the Pi.

I have had a lower-capacity SSD drive also connected to the Pi via USB for some months, which IS powered from the Pi, and it works fine.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Many thanks.
