how to create a cron job on the EX4100

Hi,
I’ve been experiencing for almost a year the problem that the nas disconnects from the network after a couple of hours of non-use. I removed the standby and I put static ip but nothing. I ask you to explain to me how I can create a cron job step by step to ensure that it does not go further. I’m inexperienced on the subject so I have neither the knowledge nor the courage to intervene on a machine that I could break

Someone has already done an article on how to create a cron job on the EX4100 units. From what you are describing above where the unit “disconnects from the network”, I am wondering if you are having the same issue with your unit as I am with mine. I think there is either some kind of software issue or hardware issue with the unit, that causes it to kernel panic and this results in the unit becoming non-responsive. Long threads on this already (search on EX4100 and unresponsive).

Others with EX4100 units have indicated that they have successfully got them RMAed with WD, so if you are seeing the same issue, it might be worth pursuing that avenue.

hello JediNite, I had already seen the link but I can not physically modify the config because it does not make me change the characters, maybe inexperienced I can not do it myself, if you can tell me a method to do it I would be grateful

The two links mentioned in the earlier post are the most concise way I have seen doing it for this platform and I have used it on m own NAS at one point or another.

The second one really goes into it in more detail, so suggest you follow it. For editting the files, you will need to use something like “vi” and unfortunately it is a bit tricky to learn. Look for guides out there on vi. Most important commands in vi are:

:q! - Exit the file with no changes
:wq! - Exit the file and write changes
ESC - toggles between command mode and typing mode

It really is something that you need to learn.

If you really can’t work it out, I am happy to help you out with modifying the file, if you send me a copy of the config.xml file and what you want the command to be added and the schedule.

Hello Jedinite, sorry if I answer so late but I have not had time, it would be really nice of you to be able to edit the file for me. The command I would like to insert, I tried from the console but I could not make any changes, is to be able to create a small file in any default folder of the nas that is then updated by the same nas every minute. A user has succeeded from the console but after making changes (with the crontab -e command) I can not save and exit as a result. If I can, I’ll attach this user’s link.
I tried to load the file but it does not recognize the extension and therefore prevents me from loading it … solutions?
