How to backup in windows 8 without using smartware

I have two questions.

  1. I had windows XP and I used smartware to backup. Now, I got windows 8 new box,. I can see mybooklive dashboard

but since  I did not  download smartwrare, I cannot retrieve my old files. Does the new smartware work with windows 8?

I think I need to download smartware because I did only category backup in my old machine.

  1. Later on, I don’t want to use smartware. Is there a way to back my files up in windows 8? I guess I can just copy and paste to the mapped mybook live drive.

Thanks,

Sankar

1-Yes, it works with Windows 8. Check the link below to download the latest version.

2-You can use the Windows backup option, or any 3rd party backup that is available.

Hi,

Thanks for the links. Now, my last question is:

I had XP box and I did category backup to MBL. I see the MBL as network on my new Windows 8 box. I also see:

Public, SmartWare,TimeMachineBackup and two users folders.

My understanding is in Smartware, there is file called WDSmartware.swstor  and that is where the encrypted backup is.

So, is it the only way to restore if and only if I install Smartware again in my windows box and retrieve through their tool?

I was not planning to install Smartware software because it seems to use up processor power. I am now thinking may be that is they only way to get my files back.

Thanks a lot.

Sankar

Yes, you can also explore the smartware.swstor folder and copy your files manually from there.
