How to access files

Hi, I have a my book live nas drive which I’ve not used for some time but I need to get the files off the drive. I can’t seem to access them over my network any longer. How can I get the files off the drive and onto my pc? Can I simply plug the Ethernet cable directly into my laptop and will the files be visible that way?
