How Do You Monitor Long-Term HDD and SSD Health?

Hi everyone,

What methods do you use to monitor the health of WD HDDs and SSDs over time?

I’m particularly interested in how people track drive temperature, power-on hours, SMART information, bad sectors, SSD wear, and other indicators that may help identify a storage problem before it becomes serious.

Do you rely primarily on WD software, operating-system tools, or third-party utilities?

It would be useful to hear which monitoring practices have worked well for different storage setups.

Thanks!

Keep a simple baseline of each drive’s SMART values and compare them periodically, especially reallocated sectors, pending sectors, uncorrectable errors, SSD percentage used, and temperature. A drive that suddenly starts showing changes deserves attention even if its overall SMART status still says “Good.” I’d also enable Windows Event Viewer checks for disk and storage errors, since Windows can sometimes report read or controller problems before a SMART warning becomes obvious. For important data, I’d treat monitoring as an early warning system rather than a backup replacement.
