External Drives must be formatted to APFS. If you format to APFS the drive will only work with mac’s running High Sierra. I formatted mine with an older MBP to Extended Journal and it now works with all my Mac’s.
This is not true. you can still format them in other file systems. also you posted in the wrong board.
