HELP! Lost Files on My Book 2TB when Copying from Other External HD

I accidentally overwrote a large folder when I was copying from my WD 500GB external HD to my WD 2 TB My Book external HD. I stopped the copying part way through the process (because I realized it was a mistake) only to discover that some very large folders of video (.dv + .mov + mp4) and music (aiff, wav + mp3) (approx. 800GB) had disappeared from my WD 2 TB My Book external HD, and the available capacity had increased from the previous (approx.) 997GB to 1.7TB - indicating that data had presumably been deleted.

My computer is an ancient Mac Powerbook w/ OSX Tiger - but still works!

My WD 2 TB My Book external HD is working fine and does not appear to be damaged.

Question: Do you think these missing files are still in the HD and recoverable?

FYI - through research online I discovered that the My Book HD should have SmartWare in the Extras folder - which, when installed, would make recovery of lost files easy. Unfortunately, the SmartWare is not present and I am wondering if it was ever there or has also been lost.

Any help/feedback appreciated

Bo

Hello,

It might be possible to get the files.

Have you tried using a data recovery software?

Thanks. No, I haven’t tried data recovery software. Do you have any suggestions?
