Encryption: performance penalty

Hello,

I own a My Cloud EX2 Ultra.
I am thinking of turning on encryption of my RAID1 set.
I wish the option had not been hidden on first launch… since it requires to delete everything and start afresh. I thought it would be turned on by default.

I have not been able to see how much of a penalty on performance it does. Would someone let me know?

And as far as USB backups are concerned, there is no way to encrypt backups with the default apps?

(By the way what’s the best format for hard drive regarding USB backups?)

Best

According to Single Client Performance - CIFS and iSCSI on Windows - Western Digital My Cloud EX2 2-bay NAS Review the performance drops by a lot (up to 5x on EX2).

Regarding the default backup app: No, there is no encryption available. You might luckier with 3rd party solutions like Syncthing.

Best format for a hard drive: Something more advanced like EXT4 if you come from Linux or NTFS (Windows) or HFS+J (Mac).

Basic file systems like ExFat, EXT2 will work, too but are more prone for file system corruption.

Hi,
Thanks for taking the time to answer.
I saw this review too but it’s referring to EX2 (not ultra) which to my knowledge was somewhat less powerful… I don’t know if there is an AES acceleration on Armada 385 that would do the job better.
OK for default backup app.
Regarding, external hard drive format, I don’t think My Cloud supports Ext4, does it?

EXT4 is its native format (the actual file system on the internal drives). So it supports it better than anything else.

Additionally it supports:

  • FAT :-1:
  • NTFS :+1:
  • HFS+J :+1:
  • EXT2 :-1:
  • EXT3 :-1:
  • EXT4 :+1:

Yes, that would have been my first guess too, but here: My Cloud: External USB Drive Supported File Systems it only mentions NTFS, HFS+, FAT32 and exFAT…

Check this spec sheet: https://media.eetgroup.com/documents/Doc_9269420.pdf

Most users probably don’t even know what EXT4 ist, I guess made an easier list (?).

The easiest way to find out is to try it out

Will do. Thanks!
