I recently bought two Western Digital My Book USB 3.0 drives, they are 4 TB capacity and plugged into a USB 3.0 card I installed in my HP Windows 7 computer. I went to use some mirror software I bought to use to backup the drives to each other, I’m not using the WD Smartware software. When I went to mirror certain folders it said they volume serial numbers were the same or set to 0. I then used some software to change the serial number, from http://www.xboxharddrive.com/freeware.html but it said I couldn’t change the serial number. The Hard Disk Serial number changer program said both drives have the same serial number [Deleted]
I really don’t want to reformat the drive because I’ve already populated the drive with a lot of data.
Is there a way to change the serial number of one of the drives without formatting the drive?
I have a WD 4 tb hard drive and I don’t believe that the “volume serial number” is in reference to the hard drive serial number. Must be refering to something with the information on the drive.
There is enough freeware out there that you don’t need to purchase software (usually.) To copy or make an image of a hard drive, I suggest FBAckup 4. (I’ve plugged it tonight but,no, I don’t get paid for it.) There are other freeware backup programs if you look. I have some in my archieves.
If you just want to copy files and folders from one drive to another I recommend "Gyula’s Navigator.’ If I’ve worked on a computer (which I do frequently) you will find this program on it. Kind of like my signature, I guess. I have been using this program for years and can’t live without it. It is the program I use the most. Figure out how to use it and you will wonder how you ever got along without it.
Discalaimer: I don’t get paid for any of the products I endorse. Just my personal favorites.
