Change in file size after transfer to My Cloud - solved

Dear all,

I noticed that the files I upload to my My Cloud Mirror are significantly smaller in size than their original file size. An AVI-file shrunk from 1.4GB to mere 800MB.

All my RAW photos changed at least one MB.

Is My Cloud Mirror converting the files, ie their size?

Thanks.

!SOLVED!

edit: Apple uses the decimal prefix as a measurement unit for computer storage (1MB=1,000KB) , others (Microsoft) use the binary prefix (1MB=1,024KB). Since I copied from a Mac to the WD Cloud the size appeared to be different.

Check the difference when compared:

Hi and welcome to the WD community.

This only happens with your media files or also happens with different types of files that are not Media files. Since this unit should not convert files that have been stored on it they should remain the same original size.

It would be good to also  know what firmware you are using on your unit.

Hey ArMak,

“This only happens with your media files or also happens with different types of files that are not Media files.”

So it happens to…all files?

I hae the firmware: 1.05.21

I am just dragging photo and video files into my cloud using the “WD My Cloud”-App.

Cheers

i’m sorry i missed a question mark i meant to ask if the issues happened with other files that were not picture or video files.

What happens if you copy the files through a computer?

I already found out what happened. For starters I am using a Mac. The issue is the following: for Apple 1GB is 1,000MB, but for everyone else on this planet 1GB is 1,024MB. So a file on my Mac laptop will have a different size on a non-Apple device (the My Cloud Mirror in my case).

Case closed.

Cheers
