If you’re using “MEDIA SERVERS,” it’s possible the serving system doesn’t support MKV files. Example: Microsoft Windows Media Player will NOT server MKV files, unless the codecs for MKV are installed.
I do not know the current upate of the WD live. but I am guessing it is the most current. because when I plugged it in for the first time yesterday it said device needs to update and I did so.
The files work fine on my PS3 (well it did for 20 mins)
And I can play them on my computer with no issues.
I converted them to MP4 for my xbox 360 which took for ever and I think they lost some quality and the sound seems kinda off (maybe I am wrong.?)Â Â The WD can see the MP4s and play them.
A coworker said to just return the unit to bestbuy and get a different one. I wouldnt think the whole unit would be shot…?
I am currently useing VLC Media player.     Is there a better one I should be useing?
Or how do I make VLC or what ever one my defalt media player?
BTW. in the folders when I click on the MKV movies they are already in the VLC media player on my computer.
How is VLC remotely relevant to playing MKV files on your WDTV Live?
You can play files on your WDTV Live via Local Disk, Network Shares or a Media Server. MKV files (if they are authored correctly) will almost always play from Local Disk or Network Shares. MKV files will also play from SOME Media Servers. VLC does not come into play in any of these scenarios.
Please explain how you are trying to play these files.
I do not know how I am playing these files on the WD live . I guess I dont understand how this media player works (or any for that matter). I thought that it used what ever i had on my computer.     Forget I said anything about VLC.
How do I get the MKV files to work on my wd live?
Are you using the function MEDIA SERVERS or NETWORK SHARES?
Media servers
What Media Server software are you using?
how would I go about finding that out?
is this what you are talking about? 1.05.04_B
If you don’t know, then you are probably using the built in server in WINDOWS 7 which does NOT support MKV.
well that could be. can anybody tell me how to change/fix that?
Use network shares instead.
OK. I got into the network shares, It is still not seeing the mkv files. Â
I copied the files to the public folder and so far so good. I just have to figure out how public this really is. thanks for everybody’s help
