This morning for some reason I can not see my book live (2 TB) on the network anymore…
The front light is green and there is some activity on the network RJ 45 in the back.
I did a hard reset (hold the back button for 30 sec) and the front light did turn blue and then green again.
Did the reset multiple times (just in case). I did take out the power cord and waited a few minutes to plug it back in. Still can not see the device on the network.
I did try WD discovery and it does not see the device.
Everything else on the network does work fine, my WDTV does work but can not see my book live. All my home computers are on the network and they all work fine.
My book live is connected to a UPS with my switch, router and access point. All the other devices are working fine.
What should I do next? I do have more then 1.5 TB on it… Including my computers backup, movies, music and pictures… I hope I don’t loose anything…
After resetting multiple times the device (the 4 sec trick), I can now see it’s IP address in the router. I can ping it. I know it’s the right one because the Mac is the right one.
In the router, it looks like it has a static IP.
WD discovery still does not see it and I can not log into the device using IE or Chrome…
If I try to map a drive to it ( [\192.168.1.237\public](file://%5C%5C192.168.1.237%5Cpublic)), I get a error message. If I use the diagnostic tools I get the message:
The remote device or resource won’t accept the connection…
I had the wrong Mac address… so the router (DHCP) never did give a IP to the device…
The lights in the back: the orange one is solid and the green one is flashing normally (seeing network traffic).
The light in front looks solid green (could be yellow because when I move the device I can see some red). Every few minutes it’s going back to blue then back to the green (or yellow) color.
Having all of this said, I think your right Chaos311, I think the device is stuck in a loop. Why did this issue start in the middle of the night, I don’t know!!! Yesterday, I did put multiple videos on it…
I think it needs to get a firmware update or just re-flash. Is there a way to do this without the device having a IP address?
I really don’t want to loose all my data on the drive, if i brake the plastic box, will I be able to make the drive work using windows 7 or XP… I am assuming it’s a different format because it is now using the OS linux so i don’t think it would work…
I have pulled mine apart before. The case slides off, it just takes some effort to get it moving at first. Don’t try prying it up, cause that will break the little rails it slides on… if you are conserned.
That being said, you could probably work through support and get WD to help you recover your data. I don’t know anyone who has done this. Perhaps another forum user would have more insite.
If you decide to do it yourself, you will need an “External Drive” bay, one that converts a 3 1/2" HDD from an internal to an external. Then you could install Ubuntu on your Windows PC (Ubuntu has a version that plays nice with Windows and will install as a file, but give you a dual boot option)… Then you would be able to access the drive’s format.
There might be some program that will let Windows read Linux formats and that would take care of the problem.
I would def suggest going through WD support first to try getting it resolved.
I did take the drive apart, I found a USB to sata converter, I did find a software that allows me to see the drive in the Linux format directly from windows 7…
I am, now, looking at the activity that have taken place on Jan 31 and something append that changed some files on that day…
You do not need to install lenny on a computer. Since you already have the drive in an enclosure, you only need a program that knows how to read EXT4 filesystem. U can download a program or driver for windows. Then you can mount the partition. Another option is to boot your computer using one of those linux live distributions like knoppix or system rescue CD.
I don’t have a MBL with me right now, but I think the data is located in /datavolume/shares/
