Can I map WD My Cloud and use it remotely from other internet network access?
I do have WD My Cloud Home and I’m using it with WD Discovery and it mapped itself
automatically, so is it possible to do the same with WD My Cloud? if so, are there anything
other steps i need to take?
Offically? No. There is no official method for mapping a remote My Cloud.
Unofficially there may be ways but typically it involves using a VPN server to create a VPN tunnel to the remote network that the My Cloud is on. It may also be possible to use FTP, but FTP is not a secure method of access.
It is also possible one might be able to use Goodsync, both the app and the module one installs to the single bay/single drive My Cloud using SSH. The app has a number of options including linking to a remote NAS running the Goodsync module. See the GoodSync website for more information about that program and if it can be configured to do a network share to a remote My Cloud…
WD had an undocumented feature in the WD2Go.com web portal many years ago that allowed one to map a remote My Cloud Share but they removed that capability four or five years ago.
It provides encryption from potentially dodgy locations (i.e. a hotel) to a (probably) secure network node (my home)
I can access my NAS drives using File Explorer.
While I use this occasionally, I don’t do this continually because;
Portable HDD’s are cheap and high capacity. . . I usually have a copy of the data with me
Frankly. . . my internet upload speed is too slow. While transferring 1-3mb files are fine. . .streaming a movie is not. Too cheap to double my internet costs for better speed.
