I am just spitballing here. I know WD support will tell me this is out of service, but My 2007 MBLive is still working, but the drive is very old. I want network storage and thought about going to a 2TB SSD. I am on MacOSX, so I am not using Time Machine, because iCloud backs everything up. I have been doing research and I see different ways to partition/format the new drive to get it working via the WD protocol. This video shows someone using command lines, but isn’t there something out there that can do it via WD’s software.
If this in’t a good idea, let me now. I have been dong research on this site, but there isn’t a lot in the legacy threads.Someone formatting a Mybook SSD
Upgrading your 2007 My Book Live (MBL) to a 2TB SSD is doable, but it’s important to note that the original MBL firmware is designed for HDDs, so compatibility could be tricky. WD’s software doesn’t officially support formatting or configuring SSDs for MBL, which is why people often use command-line methods. However, you can format the SSD using Disk Utility on macOS (ExFAT for compatibility or APFS if it’s just for Mac use) before connecting it to your MBL. After formatting, you’ll need to mount the SSD properly via the MBL’s network protocol, which may still require some command-line adjustments. Unfortunately, there’s no straightforward WD software solution for this. If you’re not comfortable with command-line operations, it might be better to look into a newer NAS device that officially supports SSDs.
Would something like this be a start? I really don’t now anything about networking. Apples sets it all up. I don’t’ want to make a server, but I would like to eventually have a RAID array. I know this is one bay, but If it is a starting point, I a look into other products. NAS housing
