I purchased a WD Elements 2 Tb portable hard drive for about $180, which I expected to backup to on a regular basis. Do I now have to spend more money, $32, for WD SmartWare Pro Software so this backup process can occur?
If so, is it a once-of fee?

The WD Elements drive is just a stand alone external hard drive. It does not include any backup software. You don’t have to use WD Smartware to backup using this drive however, If you wish to purchase it then you need to know it is a one time fee and you can use it in 3 different computers.
