Advice for new drive for my NAS

Hello,

currently I have a ReadyNAS NV+ (Netgear) with 2 disks WDC WD20EARS-00J2GB0 (Caviar Green 2TB) in X-RAID (extensible RAID config).

I want to add 1 or 2 extra disks but those (old) models are obsolete and hard to find.

I saw those new models:

* WD Green 2 TB SATA Hard Drives ( WD20EZRX)

* WD Green 2 TB SATA Hard Drives ( WD20EARX)

* WD Red 2 TB Hard Drive for NAS ( WD20EFRX)

What is your advice for buying new one then? Which model is best to add to the RAID config to keep compatibility?

thanks for help on this,

Vincent

Hi well WD does not recommended green drives to be used in Raid. In raid drives should match firmware ,rotation speed and part number to be sure there are no problems. The Red drives are made for raid in a NAS and are recommended for that. So I don’t think you will get a recommendation for any green drive to be used the way you want WD stance on this is if you want to use green drives in a NAS your on your own and will not support it, they would suggest getting the right drive for the application. So really it is up to you although a Raid ready drive like the Red series would not work well with the green drives your best bet for stability would be all Red drives.

Thanks for this clear response.

I will re-think my purchase, maybe buying new Red drives, but then I will have to replace my current 2 Green drives too…

As of today I was really satisfied with mine.
