4 tb WD My Book external not showing up

I purchased a 4TB WD My Book external drive.  Hooked it up, and nothing!  I can not find it while searching the computer, nothing found when doing a device scan, nothing!  I have Windows 8!  I checked to make sure things were alright by hooking up my other external (2 tb) that I have had for almost 2 years, and it was recognized right away!  I do not have them both hooked up at the same time, so don’t think the signature collision is the issue.  Can anyone help me figure this out?  I am a student and also trying to get my photography business off the ground, and need reliable storage for my images.  Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the community,

I recommend you try some basic troubleshooting:

1- Connect the power adapter to the wall directly.

2- If the computer is a desktop, connect it on the back USB port (directly to the PC, not through a hub).

3- Try another USB cable and another computer if possible.

4- Make sure you hear the connection sound windows makes when recognizes a USB device.

5- Go to "Disk Management” to verify if the drive shows up there.

If the drive shows up in Disk Management but it is not seen on Computer, then it means the partition is corrupted and you will have to format it in order to use it again. Please note that formatting the drive will delete all data stored on it.

Hello. I have the same problem, can´t find my  WD My Passport on my computer on windows. Isn´t there any way to cure corrupted partition, some software? I have important data on my WD drive.

Same problem i am facing.

can you please let me know if you get it fixed already.

Please suggest i want my old data from that drive as well.

Sometimes TestDisk  http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk can fix corrupt partitions.
