Hello,
2 weeks ago, I purchased an 8TB My Book Duo (WDBLWE0080JCH-EESN) from Amazon. Once it arrived I set it up to RAID Mirror 1 configuration as I wanted it to back up my data.
13 days into using it, I got a red light showing up on the 2nd disc - and a pop-up message saying that there’s an ‘Error in RAID configuration’ - and so I pop open the latest and ‘greatest’ WD Drive Utilities only to find out that the RAID status is now: Degraded - “because only one drive is working” - and as indicated by the red light, ‘Drive 2 Status’ now shows ‘Empty’. Great.
I got in touch with Amazon, and they kindly sent out a replacement unit to me the next day. It arrives. I then go ahead and copy everything over from my 1st WD Duo - to the brand new one that’s just arrived. Both new hard drives are displaying nicely on the RAID status, and no red lights on the new WD Duo.
Just as I’m packing the 1st unit to be sent back to Amazon - the brand new, 2nd WD My Book Duo displays a red light again! On the same 2nd Hard Drive! In just 2 days of use!!
I pop open WD Drive Utilities, and sure enough - there is it again. Degraded, and an Error in RAID configuration. I can’t believe it. That’s two separate units, both completely failed.
Can anyone explain to me what on earth might have caused this? Both drives are sitting nicely next to my iMac (iMac running macOS Sierra 10.12.4) - with the latest WD Drive Utilities (2.0.5.18) to setup the units in RAID 1 Mirrored mode. All I’m doing is digitising my DVD library - with the WD My Book Duo being the output destination directly from MakeMKV - so all I’m doing is writing data directly to the WD My Book Duo, as opposed to copy’ing it over from my iMac. There isn’t a crazy amount of data on there as yet either - just 500GB from all the DVD’s I’ve already copied over.
Can anyone explain to me, what could possibly be the cause of this epic failure?
Thanks.
