WD TV Live firmware release (version 1.01.12) - Important update

Follow up to our post of 4 Dec 09 regarding problems with the firmware update 1.01.12 for WD TV Live HD Media Players

We have tracked the problem to the Internet update process for WD TV Live firmware version 1.01.12. The firmware version is functioning normally, the problem intermittently occurred when using the Internet to update WD TV Live to version 1.01.12. If you’ve successfully installed update 1.01.12, there’s nothing further you need to do.

If your product failed during the update process, we will replace it free of charge. Please contact our customer service department. [link: http://support.wdc.com/contact/index.asp?lang=en]

The product in stores and shipping today is functioning normally. Update version 1.01.11, and the Internet update process for 1.01.11 are also functioning normally. So if you own a product that you haven’t updated, or buy a product today, you can safely update it with version 1.01.11, which is now the most current update.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

I sympathize for all of those affected by this, it really ■■■■■.  I am fortunate because I’ve been too busy to use my WD TV Live lately and haven’t had it hooked up to the Internet at all.

Now to my question for any WD manager,  Nik71 wrote:

He/she mentioned they believe the failure is related to updating online through the Internet.  So does that mean it’s SAFE for users who have never updated (I think I’m on 1.01.10) to download the 1.01.12 firmware and update LOCALLY via USB?  (Assuming we had already downloaded 1.01.12 before it was taken down)

Thanks

I wouldn’t install any firmware (especially version 1.01.12 as I’ve read a complaint about a unit being bricked with local USB upgrade as well) until and unless its available on their site for download and out there in public for at least a week! This would give you ample time to make sure things are stable. This whole firmware fiasco is a lesson for everyone. Patience is a virtue  Wait till the new version is out.
