Password protect My Passport Essential for use on PC and Mac

Hi there,

I have just reformatted my older “My Passport Essential 500GB” to exFAT so as to be able to write and read some personal files from PC (Windows 7) and Mac (Sierra 10.12.4). I am now seeking to password protect this portable HD that would work on both PC and Mac. Any suggestions / advice how to get around?

P…s. I’m not very technical savvy so detailed explanations are welcome…
