Newer My Passport 5TB HDD, file transfer drop to 0 bytes/s

Hi, I have always been using WD My Book and My Passport for the past 10+ years, and have no problems copying video files from old_Passport to new_Passport until recently.

I bought a new 5TB Passport HDD in 2024-Jun.

To back up my old 5TB Passport HDD, bought in 2020-Oct
PN: WDBPKJ0050BBK-0A

When copying files from old_Passport to new_Passport, there were no problems. But when I copy the same files from new_Passport, to another HDD, some files’ transfer rate will drop to 0 bytes/s. I click “cancel” and it will get stuck at “stopping” or “not responding”, waiting for more than 15 mins, close the Task Manager, Eject, shut down computer, etc, nothing works. This happens many times. There seems to be no clicking sound coming from the new_Passport. I had to pull the plug, else the Win10 desktop will just freeze there… It is very frustrating and time consuming.

I went back to my old_Passport to check the “problematic” files, they seemed ok, I can play them, I can copy and paste them to another HDD. So I don’t think the files were corrupted. I think it is the new_Passport that is corrupting my files, when it is copied over.

I never had such problems with WD in the past, where I was able to click copy and paste, then come back 2 hours later and all files are transferred, now it gets stuck at every other specific file, it is very painful to use now. This incident shakes my confidence in using Passport for my next backup.

I don’t know if this is a “they don’t make HDD like they used to no more” or I just happen to have a bad HDD. When I first got the new_passport, I did a WD Drive Utilities “complete drive test” it was all ok. Today I did the complete drive test on the said old_passport, and new_passport. It was the old_passport that shows no problems. The new_passport, it shows “quick drive test failed” and “complete drive failed”. Anyone else encounter this issue? Its driving me nuts, taking forever to do a backup.

  • You can backup your data before making any changes.
  • You can reformat the drive to resolve potential file system issues.
  • You can use file transfer tools like TeraCopy to avoid transfer problems.
  • If the drive is still under warranty, you can contact WD support for a replacement.

Thanks, this is the 1st time I heard of “Teracopy”, will try this out. I’m not sure if its because I used the HDD for too long, i.e. transferring 4TB in multiple batches simultaneously
