New Release - WD TV Live Firmware Version 1.06.34_V (9/24/12)

Same here !

My device keeps starting up (moving ring of circles) without stopping, if a WLAN-stick is attached while starting up. Removing the WLAN-stick before starting up doesn`t make a difference.

Only way to get the device started is to attach an USB-stick before pressing the Power-button. The device says that the media (on the stick) could not be played. Pressing OK brings you to the main menu and you can exchange the USB-stick with the WLAN-stick. Everything else seems to work fine (so far).

Which firmware is the correct one for the UK WD LIVE TV HD please. Tried 34 and gone back to 1.05.04, but can I install version 1.06.16_B, which says it is for the US and is a TV PLUS?

Otherwise, where can I download the latest version before the broken version?

Thanks.

I just updated today.

I can access my Network Share fine, and see the files and folders on my PC fine, but tried playing several .mkv files and it takes forever to start playing. Its just a blank black screen like other users have reported. I initially thought it did not work anymore.

After trying countless times after turning off and on the wdtv device, a file finally started playing.

The iOS remote app works for it though.

WD please address this issue ASAP!

Adding my flames to all these reports: lost 1 hr of valuable evening time with this ā€˜upgradeā€™, got pretty much all the defects previously report. Ā My WD Live Plus is basically non-functional now. Ā Had to do the Wal-Mart thing and Roll Back.

What the h*** in Elbonia did your coders/testers/QA people do when they should have been testing.

Your Project Manager (if there is one) handling releases should have his cubicle cleared (if he/she has one) and escorted out by security.

I know, maybe WDā€™s dev/test systems were hacked and this isnā€™t the release they thought it was!

Naw thatā€™s too simple, Iā€™ll vote for pure incompetence.

WD, WD, WD get your act together. Ā You make great HDā€™s but apparently canā€™t make consumer networked devices at least media players!

If your version of the Live Plus box sold in the UK is similar to ours in Canada, you probably were on 1.06.16_B or the previous 1.05.04_B.

I would download 1.06.16_B and stick the three files into the root of a USB thumb stick. Ā After inserting into one of the USB port on the box, turn off the box and turn on again. Ā Navigating to Home->Settings should throw you into an onscreen message that new firmware was found. WDā€™s rollback page:Ā  http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5800

As the note on that page warns, the messge that appeared onscreen was not accurate; mine read 2.06.16_B instead of 1.06.16_B. Ā I pressed OK anyway and after one reboot I was back watching my movies.

Good luck, and keep pestering WD for better Cust Serv and working firmware releases!Ā

Thanks for the info.

moush, do not install the 1.06.16_B firmware on your UK WDTV Live.

The _B firmwares are for the Plus model, which from your post you donā€™t have.

I reverted my (European) WDTV Live (not plus) to the 1.06.15_V firmware which was what was on it before the upgrade.

(Iā€™m guessing this is the same model as yours as the power supply came with two detachable thingies for UK plug or Euro)

Anyway, the _B firmware is probably not suited to your device, and might even damage it.

I got the 1.06.15_V firmware from here:

http://download.wdc.com/wdtv/wdtvlive_1.06.15_V.zip

The roll-back page didnā€™t have anything past 1.05, so you can use this file, but you have to open the .ver file in notepad, and make the version in it higher than what you have already (I changed it from 1.06.15_V to 1.06.35_V) then it will see it as an update.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Owaing, downloading that version and put it back, currently on the trashed version.

Regards,

Looks like thereā€™s links to lots of previous firmware here:

EDIT:Ā  sorryā€¦I see these are for North American models only

Thanks fhall1 and owaing for your corrections to my response to moushā€™s firmware question.

Guess the Canadian version is essentially the US version. Ā Many of my other devices from US based firms include Canada in the ā€˜Internationalā€™ zone cause we all know that itā€™s not really part of North America (at least with regards to distributors).

Cheers to everybody whoā€™s helping with this WD release fiasco.Ā

trying to be objective and helpfulā€¦ ā€¦ ā€¦ . . .

WD TV Live Plus HD Media Player (2nd Gen.) (North America)Ā (WDBABX0000NBK-NESN)

-in Canada

-primary usage is Youtube, USB attached storage and periodically network shares/media servers

-upgraded to 1.06.34_b from 1.0.6.16_b

Upgrade went fine - I had auto-play off.

Subsequent to upgrade:

  1. Can not access any network sharesā€¦ even wide open shares are not seen (both windows/samba) that were fully accessible prior to upgrade.

  2. Youtube leanback version - itā€™s cute and if the hardware had more juice, this would work excellently, but definitely a resource pig with a likely memory leak - my device locked upo several times and rebooted while usingā€¦ as much as I hate the history of searches being stored with the old version and the bugs it had, at least it was usableā€¦ I think the constantly-running search is the cause here.Ā Ā  This is a deal-breaker for me as Iā€™m a big fan of youtube on the wdtv (apart from being discriminated against by some content posters!heheh) and will rollback the firmware this evening.

  3. accessing my movies (mkv, avi, mp4) all seemed to work fine on the attached USB storage (1.5TB seagate freeagent) - no stuttering or delays as described by some users.Ā  no idea how they work on my GIG lan connection as my device no longer sees or can accesss shares.Ā

Ā (BTW - I checked various sized files - largest being a 9GB mkv movie file.)

I also primarily use mine for movies/pictures on my harddrive as well as Youtube. I have two WDTV Live systems, both upgraded to the new firmware and both lock up or take 10 minutes when clicking on youtube. Iā€™ve touted to all my friends how great WDTV is, and now after frustration Iā€™m second guessing that. Ā Hopefully WD puts out another firmware that fixes this.

Thanks owaing, the exact version I was looking for.

Everything back to normal.

They never will - they havenā€™t even commented here on all the problems people are having.

Update caused issues playing mkv files for me, stuttering/freezing/long loading times over ethernet and usb.

Could still access network shares.

Rolled back successfully and playback is back to normal.

I registered just to post what a fail this firmware is. I assume it was not tested much before roll-out. As many others have mentioned, network play is awful now where it was just fine before. Also, one playing and if you pause it also takes ages to resume on hitting play. Found this thread when hunting around on how to roll-back the firmware. Very fortunate that seems pretty straightyforward, something Iā€™m about to do right now.

Ok, so iā€™m not the only one

I was so happy with the last build, never any problems, after upgrade today

It takes around 5 minutes to start any video file from my network share (never happened before)

Random reboots (never happened before)

My 1TB WD USB disk suddenly dissappear while browsing (never happened before)

Not good, rolling back

Never had any issue before.

After installing new firmware

  • My 2 TB WD Hard disk is Ā not read correctly. After a while, WD TV Live freezes while scanning the Ā drive for files and stuff.

  • Internet connection blocks from time to time.

  • I activated the control by going in youtube/activate whatever, but the app freezes.

  • I connected my samsung gs2 with youtube new app from the android market, set up the connection with the screen, but when Ā i click ā€œplayā€ video, i can see it is playing on my phone but nothing goes on on the screen.

Soā€¦ I think that a new firmware was needed, a lot of the new apps and stuff are really cool and i hope WD will continue to upgrade firmwares for this amazing media player, but please do a little more of testing before launching it.

I canā€™t even play a dam movie now!
The only thing i can do is listen to radio with tunein!

Best regards

Netflix is almost completely broken. Ā Impossibly long load times. Ā Also, the remote app for Android phones doesnā€™t seem to find my WDTV Live Plus, but maybe itā€™s not for it? Ā Also, Youtube seems to be experiencing the same thing as the Netflix problem.

Ok so my WDTV is relegated to the bedroom, and is standalone with just a removable HDD attached.

Updated firmware via USB stick, all done inside of 5mins and absolutely no issues.

Played back MPG/AVI/MKV/ISOā€™s all with no stutter or delay in start.

Maybe no help to those with active network connections, streaming content ā€¦ but thought Iā€™d share anyway.
