New HDD in my EX2

Just wanted to share…
I have just upgraded my EX2,
from 2 x 2 TB WD20EFRX WD Red
to 2 x 4 TB WD4003FFBX WD Red PRO
even when the WD Red PRO are not, on the compatible list with the EX2 (link: https://support-en.wd.com/app/products/product-detail/p/129#WD_compatibility)
it works great :grinning:

Back when that compatibility list was published; I think we just had WD Red for NAS drives.

Now, there is WD Red, WD Red Plus and WD Red Pro This distinction is only a couple of months old; and was forced after people started to realize how unsuitable SMR technology drives are for just about . . everything.

At this point, I would NOT recommend the lower end WD red drive. (the WD20EFRX you had would now be labeled as WD Red Plus).

To make it simple: There are SMR and CMR drives. Avoid SMR. Buy CMR.
Within CMR, you can theoretically get 5400rpm (red plus) or 7200 rpm (red pro) drives. That choice is less critical.

Sounds easy. . .but if you read HDD product descriptions. . . not so easy.
