New drive shows full

Hi. I just got a my book 1 tb. I don’t want to use the WD software & backup. I just want to copy files.

How do I install to do this?

I was hoping to plug & use. Drive shows up, but shows free space 0 and capacity 442 mb.

It looks like you are looking at the Smartware VCD and not the actual hard drive. Is it under the Hard Disk or CD-Rom section of Computer?
