My ex4100 with 2 of the 4 hard drive spots filled

Hi

I have just bought a ex4100 and currently have 2x6tb WD red drives in there.

Now I know these are hot swappable but I went into spanning mode which made me reformat the drives. I am wondering in the future if I put another 6tb in will I need to format again meaning I will lose the 12tb data on the previous 2 drives, or will it just automatically expand my drive space to 18tb?
