My Cloud Gen1 with ver 4 firmware

Just seen the post for OS5
When would that be available for my Old Gen 1 Nas drives.
I have had them for some time
Is it near time for me to upgrade to a later version.

Currently support for the first gen single bay My Cloud is End of Life and WD indicates no further software support. As of now unless WD changes its stance or makes an announcement, OS5 is limited to only those models indicated which does not include the first gen single bay.

WD Product Software Support Status

My Cloud (fw 04.xx.xx-xxx)
Last Manufactured Date: Q2 2016
Support Status: End of Updates

If one takes a look at the various issues people are having with OS5, it may not be wise at the current time to update a supported My Cloud unit to OS5.

Ok Thanks so much for me checking EOL.
Yes you are right with the issues …
every so often i refresh the firmware. on my current gen1

Currys in the UK are doing deals on the Mycloud home 4tb.would that be a suitable replacement.

The My Cloud Home IS NOT a replacement for the single bay My Cloud line. It uses a different operating system and has a different set of features and options. For example the My Cloud Home is not currently supported by OS5. Some consider the My Cloud Home a step down from the My Cloud line of devices.

Sorry for asking confused now as what to use for replacement.
What would you suggest please

If one wants to continue using a single bay My Cloud who’s hard drive has died, one can replace the hard drive within the My Cloud enclosure with a new hard drive. Just follow one of the various unbrick methods to do so. User Fox_Exe has a set of directions that many have used successfully to put a new hard drive within their My Cloud.

If one wants to replace their single bay My Cloud with a new device, then it comes down to what features or options one wants along with how much one is willing to spend. There are several network attached storage manufacturers out there who make NAS (network attached storage) devices that have more features/options, more mature firmware/operating system, and better hardware than the My Cloud line. However, most of those other units are more expensive than comparable My Cloud models. Other manufacturers, like Synology, have a few single bay units. Most other manufacturers likewise have diskless NAS enclosures where the users supplies their own hard drive(s). What many do is buy a diskless NAS enclosure then buy stand alone usb hard drives like the WD EasyStore drives which they :“shuck” and put the shucked hard drive into the diskless NAS enclosure.

If one wants to stay with WD then look at the WD EX2 Ultra and better models. The My Cloud Home isn’t really a NAS (network attached storage device). Many found out the hard way after purchasing the My Cloud Home that it doesn’t have the configurability that the My Cloud line of devices has.

In the end, it really comes down to how much one is willing to spend, and the features/options they want. Personally I decided to look elsewhere when replacing my first gen single bay My Cloud. I chose Synology due to a more stable and mature firmware/operating system that has more features and options than the comparable My Cloud model. Yes it was more money but in the end I have a much more capable NAS. YMMV (your mileage may vary)

Thanks

If the blue front LED burned out then one can change it to another color. Its a common occurrence that the blue LED color burns out. If one uses the forum search feature, magnifying glass icon upper right, they’ll find a number of past discussions on how to change the burned out blue LED to a different color, like green. For example, a couple of past discussions:
