Low System Memory

I received a low system memory notification requiring a reboot while using my player last night.  Is this something that occurs normally/often with this player?

Hi there,

Ihave not seen this error, but you can try resetting hte unit to see if it fixes the issue. Here is a link that might help with the reset process:

i have seen the low system memory error … (a while ago)

happened to me during or after watching “Youtube Leanback”

Happened to me tonight, first time I have seen it. Unit is not yet a week old. I switched on, navigated to a movie in the attached USB portable HDD and started the movie, then the message appeared. Did what it said to do and I then watched the 230 minute movie with no problems.

Anyone know why the message appears?

I received my first tonight.  It happened right after a hard reboot too.  I’ve been having issues with my player recently, but now that I see others having this particular issue too, it suggests to me that it might not be the unit failing, just perhaps bugs from the last update.

Here is a post about this problem one year ago. The thread appears to be locked so I can’t ask the last poster, a Moderator, what happened about the reported fault.

What happened to the fault ?

Nothing … WD have’nt fixed it

But, if you use Custom Firmware (running off an attached flashdrive … with a Swap File)

then, that will definately help …

I have tried it (created a 128Mb Swap File)  and did not see any “Low System Memory” errors afterwards

But, i did’nt test for very long though … bought a RPi2 around the same time and have’nt used WDTV much since

Ah… custom Firmware. When AC Ryan was in it’s bloom, there was a fair bit of Custom Firmware being produced. I had installed one.

Did a quick search on this forum but did not find a post about Custom Firmware. Can you give me a hint as to where to look?

Also, is there any advantage leaving the player in standby mode vs switch off at the wall? I don’t use it every day.

I asume that if it was off at the wall, then I would not get the Low System Memory message?

You won’t find much info on this “Official Site”  (sign-up to discuss CFW on the “WDLXTV” site)

I had this a month after purchising the device. Even after rolling back the firmware to the original, it contunues to plague my machine at least once a week (until I do a power reset, basically pulling the power and letting it sit for a few minutes).

Would be interesting to see how a custome firmware fixes this, as well as numerous other major issues.

Update…seems the WD rep only had a minor notice of this in the device’s notes. Perhaps not enough people are actually calling to complain about it. It’s clearly a fairly common issue.
