How do you recover file from hard drives set to Span in ShareSpace?

I have a ShareSpace with 2 - 1 TB drives.  Six months ago I added an additional 2TB drive but didn’t change the default RAID configuration from SPAN.  Unfortunately,  I didn’t know/understand about RAID at the time and assumed the default would be fine.

The drive I added has now failed the SMART test and I am getting the Missing Data Volume error as well.  I know that there isn’t much data on the failed drive as we don’t have much over 2 TB worth of data on the NAS. So I don’t really care about that drive and am sending it back as RMA.

However, how can I get access to the data on the other two drives which are both fine?   I have done a lot of reading about RAID 1 or 5 data recovery and went so far as to install Ubuntu but am stuck on exactly what filetype is the SPAN configuration?  EXT3 doesn’t seem to work.

Please help!  I understand that I should have/need to have backups of important data but I am learning and promise to make them if I can get access to the data.  Thank you.

Dude, sorry to bring you the bad news but a Span or a Stripe RAID tends to be unrecoverable as the data is split between the drives, even when only one drive is working until it fills up (Span). Most of the time, ALL the involved drives are needed to recover from a linear RAID, and needs to be done by a pro…
