I want to create a Safepoint for a particular share, e.g. Share1 on an attached USB drive and in a particular directory? How do I do this? When I try to create a Safepoint it only asks for the partition on the USB drive, not what share to back up (and not where on the USB drive to store it).
According to the instructions:"Select the target device and the share for the operation and click Next. If the share is password protected, enter appropriate credentials; The Create a Safepoint dialog box displays. "
It appears that the “Shares” refers to any Shares on the Target ( a Network share) rather than a Share on wdmycloud?
If so, WD Tech support gave wrong info; They had stated that I can select the shares to backup on wdmycloud…?
“Safepoints” are a copy of your entire My Cloud, basically an “all” or “nothing” kinda deal. On the other hand I think you are referring to a backup of a particular share using WD’s “Smartware” utility.
I plan to store PC backups and unique data in different shares on wdmycloud.
I don’t need to create Safepoint backups for the PC Backups, only for the data. Tech support had informed that Safepoints could be created for specified shares on wdmycloud. It appears that they were incorrect.
I guess that I could use backup software instead to backup the data on wdmycloud.
If you have SSH access you can edit the exclude.txt file in /etc/nas/NSPT/ by adding a lines for each share you want to exclude from Safepoint, e.g.
/DataVolume/shares/“Sharename”(Without the quotes)/
This will exclude the named share from Safepoint. I wish WD would include this facility in the dashboard, it seems a waste of time and space to me to have a backup of my SmartWare share, thereby creating a backup of backup.
If you have SSH access you can edit the exclude.txt file in /etc/nas/NSPT/ by adding a lines for each share you want to exclude from Safepoint, e.g.
How do I get SSH access?
*> The user manual can be found here. Starting with page 74 for “Settings”, look at page 80 for SSH. Or you can go here for detailed instructions.> Username: root
Password: welc0me (that is an Zero)
What are the advantage(s) of Safepoint vs file synchronization (or back up) software? The only advantage I can think of is that it doesn’t have to be controlled by a Computer since Safepoint operates “by itself” using the wdmycloud drive.
WinSCP (Google it) will give you explorer style access to the folders on your My Cloud, and can be easily used to edit files like the exclude.txt file.
Two things though, very important.
Having enabled SSH access via your My Cloud dashboard, it is essential to change the root password using Putty. Log in as “root”, it will ask for password which is “welc0me” by default. Enter the command “passwd root” (without the quotes) and Putty will take you from there.
If you are the SLIGHTEST bit unsure about anything once you have opened WinSCP and logged in using your new root password, then please DON’T do it. WinSCP is a powerful tool and has the potential to completely wreck your NAS in short order!
