Help in copy files from disks

Have just installed My Passport for Mac on my MacBook Air. Have backed up my system but I now want to copy photos saved on disks using my USB Superdrive onto My Passport, but it will only make an alias of the the CD onto My Passport and not copy photos over. Can anyone help me.
