For the last couple of days, I’ve left the My Passport Essential 500GB drive _connected_ to my laptop.
I normally backup once a month.
I have been connecting the drive, then disconnecting when the back up has finished.
That has been leaving me with that pesky “partial backup” message.
The file not backed up was always OutLook1.pst, 530MB
Anyway, I started my laptop this morning from stand-by mode with the drive attached from last night.
The laptop therefore had not been left running overnight.
When I looked at the WD Smartware screen, the “files not backed” up message had gone!
The OutLook1.pst file seemed to have been backed up!
I checked that by clicking on the WD Smartware screen Retrieve tab and going to where my backups are on my My Passport Essential 500GB drive. There it was. Good. Relief.
I still don’t fully understand the backup logic of WD Smartware 1.6.x and OutLook .pst files.
When and where it does the backup.
But I know that it has something to do with “only backs up OutLook files once in a 24 hour period.”
But when in that 24 hr period does it do it.
I’m still thinking about that and how it works … :-)
About 6 months ago I switched to using Windows Live Mail.
No problems backing up those file/files.
So I don’t use, edit or change the items in my OutLook file much at all now.
Therefore, there will be no reason for WD Smartware to back it up as the .pst file it will not have been changed, right?
