I have a new 16 TB external My Book drive WDBBGB0160HBK-NESN.
This drive makes a knocking or grinding sound every 5-10 seconds when sitting idle.
This is also the second identical drive I have had… I returned the last one and this new replacement is doing the same thing.
I used the WD Drive Utilities to run a Quick Drive test and a SMART test. Both passed but the Quick Drive test took about 20 minutes to run.
Is it supposed to be normal for an external hard drive to make knocking and grinding sounds every 5-10 seconds when sitting idle?
