Error with WD MY Passport - PLEASE HELP

Hello.

So I have the 1 TB WD My passport Ultra and i am using MAC Pro. It was working just fine then suddenly it stopped working, I went to the store and I bought a new USB. The man had tested it in his computer (windows) and it worked fine. I thought to myself that’s it’s finally gonna work on my MAC. However, it didn’t work. When I put on my MAC, I can see the file but I cannot copy any files in it.

When I checked Disk Utilities, I see that the file system is: Windows NT File System (NTFS)!!!

What can I do? Is there a away to convert to MAC file system or what… I want a safe way of fixing this issue. Please help

Hi there, you can format the drive under exFAT and you’ll be able to use it on both Windows and Mac. Or you can format it in HFS+ for Mac. Please be aware that formatting the unit will erase any data on it.

Hard drives can’t just change file systems on their own. This drive never should have worked (without being formatted first) on your Mac as macOS is unable to write to NTFS volumes. I would copy all the data on the drive to another location, format the drive (see the post above for links on how to do this) and than copy your files back.

I have the same problem. It was working fine then yesterday I cannot access some of the folders and files. Is there a fix on this so that I can retrieve the files? These are event photos and videos, which are very important.

Thanks

Hi @ferds - bashayer’s symptoms were pretty unique. Are you certain that your drive is showing as NTFS? If not, I would open a new topic as there are a number of things that could cause a drive to not be seen.

Hi @Great_Scottt,

I’m not quite sure if it was formatted as NTFS but it was reformatted in Mac unit using the “journaled” setting. I’m not sure if this information will help. I will have this checked. Thanks!
