I haven’t been able to find any discussion about this… So… if I have a DVD movie ripped at full 720 resolution and play it back on a 1080 television will the WDTV upsample the 720 movie to 1080 like my DVD player does?

Well, DVD’s aren’t 720, they’re 480 or 576.
But yes, it will upscale them to whatever resolution you have it set to.
True - I have loads of ISO’s and they look just as good through the WDTV as they do through my upscaling DVD player. In fact, I hardly ever use the DVD player any more.
