Does the AI era call for higher-capacity WD drives?

As AI applications become increasingly widespread, models and data files are growing in size. While a 1TB SSD might have sufficed in the past, will we need larger capacities in the coming years?
Do you think 2TB, 4TB, or even 8TB drives will become the mainstream standard? What capacity WD drive are you currently using?

My older 1st generation WDMYCLOUD is a four TB and my 2nd generation is three TB. My desktop computer has a two TB SSD for the OS and a two TB HDD for data.

I will increase the sizes when I buy anything new.

I feel the same way. The amount of data requiring storage is constantly growing, and modern games are becoming increasingly massive, often taking up tens or even more than a hundred gigabytes.

Totally! 1TB used to feel endless, but with huge AI models and 100GB+ games, space disappears fast. 2TB is quickly becoming the new baseline, and 4TB will likely be the sweet spot soon! I’m currently squeezing by on a 1TB WD drive myself, but I’m already eyeing a 2TB or 4TB upgrade next.

I use 18TB and larger server class hard disks to handle games. Many games are> 50GB and some are > 100GB now.

I think 2TB is the most likely next mainstream sweet spot, but AI alone will not push everyone to 4TB or 8TB because most people will keep using cloud based models rather than storing huge models locally. If you run local LLMs, Stable Diffusion models, VMs, or work with large video datasets, 4TB can already make sense and 8TB is more of a workstation level choice for now. For a normal Windows 11 PC I would buy 2TB today if the price difference is reasonable since 1TB can disappear surprisingly fast. I don’t personally use a WD drive or own hardware, so I can’t truthfully give you a capacity from my own setup.
