Connecting My Passport from Windows XP 32 bit to W7 64 bit

Hello,

have My Passport 500 GB drive, which was connected to my old PC in order to make backup all the time. Now bought new PC with W7 64 bit. How to connect my external disk properly - do I have to download WD software first?

Hello,

The drive should be recognized when you connect it to the Windows 7 computer.

After connecting, I see yes, drive is recognized, but I don’t see WD Smartware anywhere in my PC, so no possibility to use other option than manually moving files.

Hello,

you can download any software that came with your drive from Western Digital website.

Post the model number of your drive and I will give you the correct link.

It is WD My Passport  500 GB. I bought it on October 2010 + registered on WD site.

Any updates on where could I find a software?

Hello again.

Check the label on your drive and post the model number here to verify if it included a backup software or not.

If your drive is from 2010 and its not a Passport Essentials then it probably included a backup software called WD Anywhere Backup.

You can download it from here

How can I obtain WD SmartWare? It left in an old PC. Or is licence for one PC only? But I can uninstall from old as I don’t need it there anymore.

Any updates?

Can anybody tell why WD SmartWare is not recognized by my new PC? Is external HDD intended to make backups only with old PC? If not, where can I get WD SmartWare to my new PC?
