Computer won't reboot or come out of sleep mode

i have to disconnect my external drive (my book essential) before i re-boot my computer or it will not reboot. this also happens sometimes when my computer is in sleep mode- it will not wake up unless i shut the computer down abruptly then disconnect my external drive. is there a alternative solution besides shutting down computer and/or disconnecting hard drive ? it did not do this all the time it just started when i bought a new computer- i went from a gateway to a lenovo

Hi, I would check the BIOS settings and make sure that the first boot option is the internal drive of the computer instead of a USB device and see if this helps.

I’ll try that tomorrow, thanks.
