Can not erase/format/ partition 3TB My Passport Ultra metallic with MacBook Pro

I just purchased a 3TB My Passport Ultra metallic from Amazon for my MacBook Pro. When I proceeded with disk utility, I followed WD support directions. The drive was found, I entered name of drive, selected Mac OS extended, and hit erase button and followed WD directions completely. I received error: ‘Operation failed. Mediakit reports not enough space on device for requested operation’

Now the drive indicates entire disk full, cannot partition, and unrecognized when rebooted. I tried turning off antivirus, closing all applications, and started in safe boot and retried to no avail. No better with other USB cords or ports. Drive is recognized when attached to another PC running Window 10, but not by my older MacBook Pro (same results when I tried to erase/partition with it)

I have used an older Passport Ultra 2 TB with my older MacBook Pro for 3 years without problems. Any suggestions or should I return this and look for another external drives?

Hello,

Try selecting “GUID Partition Map” instead of “Apple Partition Map” as Scheme.

Try following these instructions through the terminal application https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/comments/40yvjh/disk_utility_fails_to_eraseformat_an_external_hdd/
