Cable length WD My passport X

I recently purchased a WD My passport X and the cable that came with it had a loose connector. I’m now using a 1 meter (around 40 inch) generic USB cable and it seems to work just fine, but I read that WD recommends using a cable of 18 inch or shorter. 

Now 18 inch is around 45 centimeter but most cables you can buy here are 50 centimeters. Can I safely use a 50cm cable or is that too long?

While long cables can work, short cables are commended because cable length affects energy distribution and data transmission speed.

Thanks for the answer. I contacted WD support and they’ll send a replacement cable. In the meanwhile I’ll keep using this longer cable as it seems to work perfectly fine. Perhaps the USB port I use supplies enough power for longer cables.
