Can I use a longer USB cable?

I just bought a 3TB Passport Ultra to use for the Carbonite mirror image backup on my Win XP workstation. The USB cable that comes with it is only about 20" long. The workstation sits on the floor at the side of the desk. I would like to put the Passport disk on the desk, but that would require a cable at least 40" long.

Can I buy a longer cable and, if so, which one? I see that this disk supports USB 3 and USB 2. My XP system only supports USB 2.

sure, you can use a longer cable … 40" inch though, is getting a bit long and there could be power / speed issues

you might have to look into a powered usb hub to put “in between”

or just simply find somewhere apart from your desk to place it
