Hello! The last time I updated my external HD was back in 2012-2013. The problem that happened that time was the firmware update failed, leaving my HD bricked. The HD is password protected using the WD Smartware MAC. When attached to my computer, the HD does not run and computer does not recognize it. I then transferred the HD to an external reader and the HD ran but disk manager told me that I needed to format the drive. Is there any way to retrieve my files? I am quite sure that the HD itself is still in good condition, its just that the firmware update failed and left the board dead.

Have you tried using a data recovery software to get your data out of the drive.

Tried using a data recovery software but since the drive is locked, it does not really work. I even asked someone to do a home data recovery but he failed to recover the files. He told me to bring the HD to a professional data recovery company but I do not feel comfortable in just giving it to them.
