Automatic backup files and distant bakcup

Hi,

I’ve been using dropbox for a while now and I am a bit dissapointed about the WD Cloud (maybe I don’t know how to use it though).

With dropbox, I can have a Dropbox file on my computer that is always updated. So if i put anything in it, it automatically is updated online. Here, it seems I have to open the app anytime I want to do it.
Also, I would like to us my cloud to backup my computer in case of a robery or a fire. I would like my computer to be backedup automatically or at least some local files. But it seems very tricky if the computer is not in the same network. But why would I want my computer on the same network as my cloud? I want my data in a safe place and accessible.

Any suggestion?

Yes. First read the My Cloud User Manual (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/?id=439&type=25) which explains how to configure and use the My Cloud.

Second, if you want Dropbox like capability, go with Dropbox. Far to many are expecting NAS drives like the My Cloud to behave exactly like Dropbox. NAS drives generally serve a slightly different function than Dropbox.

Third, WD Sync or third party software like Free File Sync (http://www.freefilesync.org/) will give one the capability to sync files from the computer to the My Cloud.

Fourth, the WD My Cloud mobile apps will backup photos and video to the My Cloud both through the local network or remotely.

Fifth, one can use Smartware included with the My Cloud, or third party backup software and backup their computer to the My Cloud.

Sixth, read the My Cloud User Manual or see the following WD Support document that explains how to map a My Cloud Share to the computer for easy access with Windows File Explorer or Macintosh Finder.

Seventh, WD removed the remote mapping capability last year when they released the OS3 firmware for the My Cloud. Feel free to join the others in complaining about it in the following Cloud Ideas thread.

Lastly, see the following WS Support link to download the various WD programs and apps.

Hey,

Thank you for your answer… Don’t need to be passive aggressive though.
Very interresting. I understand if I want dropbox, I simply go with dropbox. But all I want is a userfriendly cloud. Well, I’m going to try all the things you wrote. It seems you solved a lot of my issues! Thanks a lot again!
