Is there a way other than using the remote to input the wireless network settings such as the SSID and password as using the remote is annoying especially with long passords with all sorts of characters!

Try using a plain, vanilla USB keyboard.
Sorry but what do you mean by plain or vanilla usb keyboard?
Take a standard computer keyboard … Plug it in either of the usb ports and you’ll be able to type.
