I now have the WDTV live with Netflix support, I think it is gen 3. Will exchanging for a gen 4 box (the one without Netflix) solve the freezing problem, or will I encounter the same problems again?

Freezing is not something you should be normally experiencing and could relate to a faulty device if you have performed a factory restore and already run the latest firmware. I’d recommend contacting WD Support about this.
