WHY can I not just use a WD portable HDD instead of a PiDrive?

WHY can I not just use a WD portable HDD with suitable cables instead of a PiDrive?

You probably can, but you may need an additional powered hub to provide enough power to run it - the Pi’s USB ports may not be enough. It depends on your power supply and how you have the Pi configured.

The PiDrive is designed to be “all in one”, basically a combined drive and power wiring to support both it and the Pi. It’s also compact so that it could be easier to fit into cases and other enclosures.
