Which media converter for Mini?

I have .avi video files from various cameras and .wmv files from Microsoft movie maker, which do not play on the WD Tv mini. The manual just says a media converter application is required; but which one? My priorities are: 1. Open source (or freeware) 2. Picture quality 3. Small and simple program. Which media converter application is recommended for .WMV and .AVI for the Wd Tv mini. Any suggestions please??

Thanks, but I see on the handbrake.fr website that .avi “is now gone. It is not coming back”. What is now recommended for .AVI?

Or does the removal of .avi only refer to output formats? Will handbrake still accept .avi as an input? This not not clear to me from the handbrake.fr website.

I do believe AVI is still allowed for INPUT, but I’m not certain…   I agree with them that AVI is “Dead,” because I have NONE of them.  :)
