Had a prolonged power failure…disk went blank…I can see the drive (G) and can drag/drop data in it…When opening WD smartware the icon on the left representing the OS (C) data for backup is empty…how to rectify situation?

Try uninstalling Smartware and then do a clean installation of the latest version. 

Uninstalling WD SmartWare Version 1.6.x and earlier from an external drive’s VCD on Mac OSX does not remove it from the Application folder
