wd3200jb S.M.A.R.T hdd sistem failure

I have received a wd3200JB 320G hard drive for free,but…it has a problem,BIOS detect the hard drive corect,but the hard is not working good,with the hdd attached to sistem xp starts in few minutes,without hdd it start under 1 min,in windows the hdd is visible only under device manager.i tried partition magic 8 but it tell me “partition table is bad” and smar is not working.

1.What is the problem?

2.From where it appeard?

3.Can it be fixed?(firmware rewrite or something,i also have electronic skills)

there are no strange sounds from hdd.

Does the problem go away if you deselect the DMA checkbox in Device Manager? This will force the drive to operate in PIO mode. AIUI, the drive’s 512-byte Identify Device data block is retrieved in PIO mode, but everything else happens in DMA mode.

I will try to disable dma and put hdd in PIO mode,it is ok to put in PIO mode(1 2 3 4 ?) from bios?i also disable checkbox from device manager.i can’t do this now bicause i’m runnig Partition table doctor who says"rebuilding partition table" and now it’s scanning for partion from a few hours,it’s ok that time(few hours)?is working very slow.

i have tried pio mode all 1 to 4 but no effect, i think it’s a firmware problem, or something from pcb malfunction.
