WD20EARS - XP Hangs in Normal Mode

Hello,

A recently purchased (clean, no data) WD20EARS 2TB Caviar Green caused Win XP SP3 to hang while booting up - the Windows XP logo appears and the “progress” cartoon continues to play indefinitely.  The drive is meant to be a secondary storage drive.  Here’s the interesting part - XP will boot up properly in “Safe Mode” or in “Normal Mode” when the WD20EARS is not attached.  Any idea what’s happening?

Any help is appreciated.

When you say not attchaed id the external drive by any chance inside a external enclosure?
