WD20EARS - extremely slow writes at 1 MB/S

I have several WD20EARS green drives. They have worked OK, and seem to mount normally. They used to work well. But now the write speed is unbelievably slow at 1 Mbyte/second. I have reformatted, and that doesn’t change anything.
I have tried connecting to different systems (Windows and Linux) and always get the same results.

From Linux, I tried to run the Smart tools. The output is extremely slow - it takes about a minute to print this bit of text line by line:

$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda1
smartctl 5.41 2011-06-09 r3365 [armv7l-linux-4.1.17-v7+] (local build)

So it says SMART is enabled, but doesn’t give any data from the drive?

I’ve seen various postings on the WD20EARS slowness over the years, but never any solution. Can anyone point me to a solution for this problem?

Hello, I would connect the drive to a Windows computer and run the WD Data Life Guard tools and see if you have damaged sectors.
